Greece’s August visitor growth outpaced travel receipts

“The rise in travel receipts stemmed from a 13.4% increase in inbound traveller flows, as average expenditure per trip decreased by 6.5%.”

Bank of Greece, 22 October 2026

Greece received more visitors in August 2026, but their spending grew more slowly than their numbers. Inbound traveller flows rose by 13.4 per cent from August 2025, while travel receipts increased by 6.5 per cent. The Bank of Greece attributes the difference to lower average expenditure per trip.

For businesses in Lefkada, the figures separate two questions that a busy waterfront can make look identical: how many visitors arrive, and how much they spend during a visit. The evidence standard for that split is set out in Tourism Beyond Volume: Evidence Standards for This Series. The national totals show a larger market. They do not show whether a particular island’s accommodation, restaurants or shops earned more.

August spending grew more slowly than arrivals

The provisional release puts August travel receipts at €4.87 billion, compared with €4.57 billion a year earlier. Average expenditure per trip fell by 6.5 per cent. That measure concerns the whole trip, so the decline cannot on its own be read as a fall in daily prices or spending per night.

The longer period gives a different picture. From January through August, receipts rose by 9.4 per cent to €18.20 billion, while inbound flows increased by 10 per cent. Average expenditure per trip remained almost unchanged, according to the bank. August’s decline was therefore sharper than the eight-month pattern.

Road arrivals grew faster than airport arrivals

Over those eight months, traveller flows through road border crossings increased by 22.6 per cent, against 5.7 per cent through airports. These are changes in national entry flows, not measures of the destinations visitors subsequently reached. Neither rate can be assigned to Lefkada or its nearby airport, Aktion, from this release.

The Bank of Greece estimates travel expenditure through its monthly Border Survey at major entry and exit points. Its receipts survey concerns spending in Greece by residents abroad. The inbound-flow figures exclude cruise traffic beyond what the Border Survey records.
