September continues Lefkada’s visitor season under different conditions. The most recent complete traffic figures show fewer passengers using Aktion airport than in August. Climate normals show lower temperatures while the island loses more than an hour of daylight during the month. Greece’s official fire season remains in force, so the changes affect transport checks, outdoor timing and the margin needed for weather.

The comparison below uses official 2025 airport traffic, 1991–2020 climate normals and calculated daylight for September 2026. Each measure has a defined scope. Together, they describe the practical shift after August while leaving visitor counts and daily weather to their appropriate sources.

The gateway gets quieter, but it does not close

Aktion airport is the nearest airport to Lefkada and a useful indicator of seasonal traffic. According to Fraport Greece’s August 2025 figures, the airport handled 203,746 passengers and 1,553 flights that month. In September 2025, it handled 161,431 passengers and 1,143 flights.

Flights1,5531,143410 fewer, a 26.4% decrease

The figures cover airport operations. Onward destination, length of stay and island road traffic remain unmeasured. The nearest air gateway operated at a lower volume in September than in August, so every route and frequency needs a direct September check.

Check the operating carrier, airport transfer, intercity bus and any boat service separately. A general travel page can become outdated while the operator’s own timetable has already changed.

Temperature normals fall by several degrees

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service publishes 1991–2020 normal values for Aktion. The station’s average temperature is 26.9°C in August and 23.5°C in September, a decrease of 3.4°C. The normal average maximum falls from 30.9°C to 27.2°C, while the normal average minimum falls from 21.7°C to 18.8°C.

These are long-term monthly averages for the Aktion station. A current forecast supplies the day-level information for a beach, town street or mountain village. September can still contain a hot period, rain or wind that changes a sea crossing or an exposed walk.

The practical change is the wider range of conditions a day can contain. Light clothing may still suit midday, but an early start, an evening return or time in the high interior can require another layer. Plans that depend on calm water or a dry trail need a current forecast close to the day.

September loses more than an hour of daylight

For nearby Preveza, calculated daylight on 1 September 2026 runs from a 07:05 sunrise to a 20:07 sunset, about 13 hours and 2 minutes. On 30 September, sunrise is at 07:31 and sunset at 19:21, about 11 hours and 50 minutes. The month loses approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes of daylight.

The exact visible light on Lefkada also depends on terrain, cloud and the horizon. The monthly direction is clear: an itinerary that fit comfortably before dinner in early September may run into dusk near the end of the month. Set the return time before choosing the day’s final destination.

Fire season is still active

Greece’s official 2026 fire season continues through 31 October. Restrictions and wildfire risk can remain active during September’s lower average temperatures. The daily risk map, Civil Protection instructions and local prohibitions remain relevant to road access, outdoor work and the use of fire.

Do not use a monthly climate average to make a same-day safety decision. Check the official fire-risk map and weather warnings, follow closures, and avoid any activity that can produce a flame or spark where it is prohibited.

What to plan differently

September in Lefkada has its own operating conditions. The nearest airport remains active at a lower volume, average temperatures decline, daylight contracts quickly and the national fire season continues. Those are measurable changes. They reward current checks and a more deliberate daily plan.
