“The two associations signed a Cooperation Protocol and a Declaration of Twinning.”

Agechoros association statement, 3 September 2026; translated from Greek by Othisis

The Agechoros folklore association of Lefkada and the Odysseas cultural association of Lefkadians in Buenos Aires have formalised a partnership. Their presidents signed the documents at Faneromeni Monastery, linking an island organisation with a community formed by Lefkadians and their descendants in Argentina.

The ceremony at Faneromeni

The ceremony took place in the monastery’s synodikon in the presence of Abbot Nikiforos. Agechoros and Odysseas signed a Cooperation Protocol and a Declaration of Twinning, and their presidents, Maria Tassopoulou and Paraskevi Grapsa, exchanged commemorative plaques.

The associations named joint cultural events, exchanges of folklore material and contact between young people as possible fields of work. The statement also lists youth exchanges, music, dance, folklore, food, the Greek language and historical memory.

A signed protocol, with no dates or budget yet

The announcement gives no date, budget or first joint project. What the two associations have signed so far is a statement of intent.

The statement says the aim is to turn the twinning into a lasting working relationship, so that Lefkada’s heritage reaches Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina. How a Lefkadian folklore practice moves from performance into a formal heritage record is the subject of Beyond the Parade: What Heritage-Inventory Status Would Mean for Lefkada’s Folklore Festival. It also wants the Lefkadians there to keep their ties to the island.
